7490 and 7490E Cartridge Tape Subsystems
Through newest technology
and the latest design the 7490 and 7490E Cartridge Tape Subsystems fulfill the
exacting demands made of tape processing, data security and library storage. Superior
performance, a most compact construction and unequalled flexibility make it exceptionally
reliable and ideally suited for integration within automatic storage concepts.

Recording
technology
The difference between Hitachi's 7490 and 7490E Cartridge Tape Subsystems lies in the
recording formats. 7490 drives use 18-track-technology, which makes it possible to write
200 MB of data to one cartridge without using data compression. Drives of the
7490E-type operate in 36-track technology - doubling the storage capacity of one cartridge
to 400 MB.
Superior Performance
The Hitachi 7490 and 7490E Cartridge Tape Subsystems owe their excellent performance to
the use of the most up-to-date technology, a large buffer storage and advanced data
compression.
The 7490/7490E offers Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) as standard and Hitachi
data compression as an option. The subsystem is supplied with an automatic cartridge
changer holding twelve cartridges. Its large capacity significantly reduces
operatorintervention and achieves optimum system use.
More Channel Switches
The control units A01 and A10 allow for the connection of up to 8 parallel and (in
exchange) up to 4 ESCON® channels (up to 2 ESCON channels on A01). Using the double
controllers A02 and A20 the attachment options are increased accordingly. With ESCON
technology, data transfer rates of up to 9 MB/s are possible as well as the bridging
of up to 23 km between 7490/490E Cartridge Tape Subsystems and CPU.
E-Cartridge
This new cartridge is only supported by 7490E systems. It has twice the tape length of the
cartridges used so far in the7480 and 7490 Cartridge Tape Subsystem, providing double
capacity, i.e. 800 MB.
By making use of the IDRC data compression, a maximum storage capacity of 2.4 GB per
cartridge can be achieved with compression factor 3.
Ideal for Robot Systems
The Hiatchi 7490/7490E Cartridge Tape Subsystems were designed with a view to the
requirements of the nineties. Installation and maintenance were planned for the long term
and make the 7490/7490E the ideal cartridge system for incorporation in robot supported
storage concepts. One is no longer forced to place control units and tape drives together
in a straight line. Control unit and first drive unit can be placed separately at
distances of up to three meters and the drive units can be arranged in a semicircle. This
allows optimum use of space when linking it to an automatic library system.
